State Boys Golf: New Home, Borden County Finish Second in Respective Tournaments

Three golfers finished in the top 15 to help New Home finish second in the Class 2A state boys golf tournament, which concluded on Tuesday.

Zack Armes paced the Leopards with a 148, shooting a 71 in the first round and a 77 in the second, to finish fifth overall. Owen Morris shot a 153 to come in ninth and Graham Keys a 156 to finish 15th.

The Leopards shot a 629 for the two-day tournament to finish as the runners-up. Lindsay finished first at 617 and Albany third at 638.

Class 5A

Coronado’s Preston Defriend finished ninth in the Class 5A state boys golf tournament.

Defriend entered Tuesday two shots back of first after firing a 68 Monday. He carded a 79 in the final round for a 147 overall.

Lubbock-Cooper came in 10th in the team standings, shooting a 315 Monday and a 316 Tuesday for a 631 in the tourney.

Kyler Ezell shot a 153 to lead the Pirate contingent. Corbin King shot a 156.

Class 1A

Borden County lost its lead but wound up finishing second in the Class 1A state boys golf tournament.

The Coyotes led the pack after play Monday with a 341. They shot a 364 Tuesday, which let Wildorado leap them for the team title. Borden County wound up firing a 705 to finish second. Springlake-Earth shot a 709 to take third.

Koda Bigham led the Borden County squad with a 166, good for ninth overall. Slade Beerwinkle paced Springlake-Earth with an 11th-place finish at 167. Garrison Proctor came in 12th to help the Borden County cause.

Spur’s Preston Pafford shot a 163 to come in seventh individually.

Class 4A

Levelland’s Max Vergara shot an 80 on Tuesday to finish ninth in the Class 4A state golf tournament.

Vergara shot a 69 Monday to take the early edge. Jaxon Donaldson of Wimberley, who was one shot back after the first round, fired a 66 on Tuesday to claim the individual title.

Canyon Randall took the team title with a 603, followed by Andrews at 607.
