Lewis, Johnson and DeFriend finish tied for 15th and 16th as Wildcats conclude opening tournament

Jaime Lewis was in the top 15 while Trenton Johnson and Preston DeFriend finished tied in 16th as the Wildcats concluded their season opener at the Argent Financial Classic.

This tournament marked the seventh time the Wildcats appeared in the tournament played at Squire Creek Country Club since 2016. In the three days of play, the Wildcats played three rounds on the 7,105 yards long course with a par being set at 72.

ACU finished 17th in the 18-team field shooting a total of 32 strokes over par for the weekend. The Wildcats competed in a talented field, which included two teams from host Louisiana Tech, South Alabama, Houston, UL-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, UAB, Southern Mississippi, Nicholls, Troy, Lamar, Western Kentucky, Little Rock, Jacksonville State and Louisiana-Monroe.

After the first day of action, Lewis led the group shooting on par, allowing him to be tied for sixth place. Thomas Buisson and DeFriend were tied for thirty-first, both shooting one stroke over par. Johnson initially struggled in the first round and was tied 55th with 13 other student-athletes. Brian Comegys completed the first group shooting six strokes over par in the first round.

In Monday’s second round of action, Lewis only shot one stroke par, keeping himself among the top 10 scores throughout the tournament. DeFriend and Buisson both shot two strokes over par in the second round and found themselves in a tie for 10th place with six other golfers. Johnson shot four over par in the second round and Comegys saw improvements from his first round and only shot four over par.

The final round led to some struggles for the Wildcats. Lewis finished the final round shooting six over par, resulting in him shooting seven strokes over par in the weekend. Johnson saw a personal tournament-best round only shooting one over par allowing him to finish only eight strokes over par and climb the standing. DeFriend shot five over par, resulting in him also shooting eight over par over the tournament and tying with Johnson. Buisson finished the final round shooting six over par, adding up to a total of nine over par over the weekend. Comegys finished the final round shooting 11 strokes over par.

Up next, the Wildcats head to the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Rice. The tournament at Westwood Golf Club will begin September 30 and will run through October 1.
